When we imagine the successful entrepreneur, writer or artist, we tend to think they did it all by themselves.

However, the idea of a single individual overcoming every obstacle on their own is not an accurate idea.

Often times, success doesn’t happen in isolation. Instead, success is almost always a collaborative effort.

In the book “Think and Grow Rich,” Napoleon Hill, who spent 25 years studying 500 of the most successful individuals of his time, discovered that the one thing that all 500 self made millionaires agreed that played a huge part in their success was the power of the “mastermind.”

What is a mastermind? A mastermind is a group of people who have similar goals in life and who work together to try to achieve those goals.

There’s no better example to illustrate the importance that having a mastermind can have on your success than the friendship between C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.

In the early 1930’s, there was a literary group known as the Inklings. The Inklings were a group of 19 men, which included writers like C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien.

For 17 years, these 19 men got together once or twice a week to discuss their works in progress to one another. During these meetings, they would give each other’s stories critiques, keep each other accountable and help make each other’s stories better.

These meetings were strictly for the purpose of the mastermind alliance and it was through this mastermind group that some of the greatest literary works were created.

The effect that this mastermind had on these 19 men shows that if want to create great work and find success, you need to involve other people into your creating process.

In “Think and Grow Rich,” Napoleon Hill said it best,

“2 or more people actively engaged in the pursuit of a definite purpose with a positive mental attitude, constitute an unbeatable force.”

This is the power of having a mastermind.

Don’t make the mistake of trying to attempt to succeed on your own.
